Medieval Tournament

12th and 13th July 2008

 

Grand Parade

Out of the mists of time a lone warrior begins the spectacular opening ceremony to the dedication of the Tournament to courtly love and fair play. More than 500 knights and their ladies gather outside the Castle in the largest massed display of historical re-enactment.  The gates open at 9:00am and parking is available free about 300 metres from the new permanent festival ground.

 

There are  Historical Combats from the Dark Ages to the Renaissance (450 - 1600 AD) demonstrating different fighting styles and archery, tourneys, melees and individual combats including- Viking, Dark Age, High Middle Ages and Byzantine warriors, German landsknechts (mercenaries), Turkish janissaries and exquisite Renaissance swordsmen. 

 

The Jousting Championships
Thrill to the breathtaking and dangerous Joust, as armoured knights on their trusty warhorses tilt to become Champion of the List.  Make sure you get a seat early as space is limited.

 

Medieval Music & Bands
Listen to the haunting timeless melodies from some of Australia’s leading medieval bands and singers.  Schola Cantorum performs Gregorian chants on Saturday, and there are other haunting songsters and performers strolling about the festival.

 

Turkish Oil Wrestling
Ladies and noble women!  Turn your glance away from the audacious sight of oiled and bronzed bodies engaging in the ancient medieval sport of Turkish Oil Wrestling.

 

Archery
Try your skills at archery or watch as those skilled in the art compete for the title of Abbey Tournament Champion.

 

Medieval Masque Ball
Bring your mask and dance to fabulous medieval and Renaissance music.  Only on Saturday, 12 July.  By limited ticket only.

Medieval Theatre
There is fascinating medieval theatre and games, including jugglers, puppetry, dancing, and costume parades for your entertainment all day long.

 

Medieval Markets
Nearly a hundred stallholders covering a huge range of products, arts and crafts in  Australia's most authentic medieval market.  Whatever you're looking for, it'll be here!

 

Food! Lots of Food Stalls
Experience delicious medieval food and drinks.  Try an authentic venison pie at the Stag Inn, or ale or cider at the Lion’s Den Tavern.

 

Finale
The grand finale of the Tournament closes on the Festival on Sunday with many re-enactment groups merging for a spectacular performance.
