Artisans
and craftspersons are invited to submit entries to the Abbey
Medieval Masterpiece Competition, which will be held as a
partnership of the Abbey Medieval Festival 2008 and the
Caboolture Artisans Guild. There are substantial prizes to
be won.
This Award aims to celebrate the spirit of the medieval
Masterpiece, the epitome of excellence within the medieval
arts and craft world and the gateway to the hallowed Guilds.
In the Middle Ages, a group of artisans engaged in the same
occupation - cobblers, stonemasons, carpenters, etc - would
associate themselves together for protection and mutual
aid. No one within a town could practise a craft without
belonging to the appropriate guild association. Members of
the craft guilds were divided into Master, Journeyman, and
Apprentice. In order to demonstrate his skill, the
candidate to become a Master had to execute a work for
official examination, the Masterpiece.
It is hoped that in time, artists and artisans may help the
Museum through the donation of these special works to form
the basis of a travelling exhibition throughout Australia.
Accepted works will be exhibited at the Old Fire Station
Gallery, 55 King St, Caboolture, Queensland.
Monday 23 June to Sunday 13th July
Official Opening: Friday 27th June.
Tickets $10.00
Tickets can be pre-purchased at the
Old Fire Station Gallery or at the door on the night.
